Pleasant Wednesday ahead, storms chances return Thursday & Friday

Wind, wind, and more wind. That's been the weather headline so far this week. However, I am happy to inform you all that today features a well-deserved but short-lived break from the gusty winds.

In my opinion, Wednesday gets a perfect 10 out of 10 on the outdoor meter. You'll just need to dress warmly before you head out this morning as temperatures have fallen into the low 30s. This may be cold enough for frost to develop in some spots.

High pressure sitting close by will result in a good amount of sunshine, especially early on in the day. There may be a few high clouds that roam in during the afternoon. That, along with today's very light wind out of the south and southeast will place highs near the 60° mark. This is right on par with where we are typically at in mid-April. Conditions remain quiet and partly cloudy overnight into Thursday, with temperatures landing in the low 40s.

As previously mentioned, a more significant round of warming is to occur before Easter weekend. Sunshine early on Thursday will give way to more cloud cover by the afternoon. Despite that, winds will be a little bit stronger out of the southeast, pushing afternoon highs into the mid 60s. Along with the temperature jump comes a jump in atmospheric moisture as low pressure swings into the plains. This will bring the chance for a few showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours.

During the day, the severe threat will be highest closer to the low over northeast Kansas, southeast Nebraska, and southwest Iowa, though a few stronger storms may slide in overnight. In their latest round of severe outlooks, the Storm Prediction Center has most of the region under a Level 1, Marginal Risk. Large hail will be the biggest concern. Continue to keep tabs on Friday afternoon and Friday night as the associated cold front may present a second opportunity for strong to severe storms locally.
