Storm reports and weather update
8:00pm Update: The Winter Storm Warning for Winnebago, Boone, Ogle and Green counties has been cancelled. The Winter Weather Advisory for Lee and Ogle counties has also been cancelled.
The heavy snow threat has ended across the immediate region as the heaviest of the snow is now well east. Wind gusts as high as 25-30 mph from the northwest will remain through the overnight so it's possible that there may be some blowing and drifting of the snow. Watch for slick roadways this evening and be safe if you have to travel tonight.

The snowfall is beginning to diminish from west to east this evening, but winds will remain fairly gusty from the north/northwest. Generally 2" to 4" has fallen with some minor accumulations expected around Rockford - points north, south and east. The snow that has fallen is very wet and now has turned to slush on roads. This has created some slick spots on area roadways and even though the snow will come to an end possibly dangerous travel conditions will persist through the overnight. It may be best to stay off roads tonight, but if you do have to travel please watch for icy spots

2:00pm Update: Moderate to heavy snowfall is now falling. The snow has begun to already accumulate on roadways and grassy surfaces. Road conditions will deteriorate by this evening. Visibility is down to a quarter mile where the heavy snow is falling.

1:00pm Update: Light rain has occasionally been mixing with sleet and snow late this morning while heavy snow has been falling across southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. A heavier band of snow is occurring from Madison southwest through Dubuque to just west of the Quad Cities. In fact, our StormTrack radar had detected some lightning within this band which may indicate some thundersnow.
Low pressure is currently near Springfield, IL with severe thunderstorms out ahead of the low and heavy snow falling on the backside. This low has rapidly been intensifying and will continue to do so through the evening. As as result cold air is being drawn into the storm from west/southwest Wisconsin through eastern Iowa. The rain/sleet/snow mixture will begin change over to snow after about 2pm from west to east. Keep in mind the transition will be sooner for locations west of Rockford. Once this change over occurs snowfall rates could approach one inch (or higher) within some of the more moderate snow bands. Snow totals could reach six inches with locally higher amounts in places where the heavy bands set up. The snow will be heavy and wet as temperatures will range from about 32° to 36° when the snow begins to fall. While there may initially be some melting on contact, higher snowfall rates may help compensate for this which will lead to deteriorating road conditions by this evening. This is not going to be a long duration snowfall event and once the low moves into southern Michigan by tonight the snow will quickly come to an end overnight. However, because we're expecting the heaviest of the snow to fall within a six hour period this will quickly cause conditions to deteriorate once the snow begins to fall. Where the snow has been falling in eastern Iowa visibility has been reduced to less than a quarter mile at times. Winds are also expected to increase and gradually switch from the northeast to the northwest with gusts that may reach 30 mph or higher.
12:30pm Update: A band of heavy snow is beginning to set up across far northwest Illinois and northeast Iowa early this afternoon. Within this band snowfall rates will likely reach, or exceed, one inch per hour. This band will move eastward throughout the afternoon. There are a few light sprinkles/rain showers out this morning across north-central Illinois but once the transition to all snow occurs it will fall at a fairly heavy pace as the low moves further east and colder air wraps in. Thunderstorms are developing in central Illinois along a warm front that will help pull moisture northward. Look for rain, possibly mixing with snow, to develop later this morning before quickly changing to snow this afternoon. Road conditions will likely deteriorate for your evening commute. Still looking at 3" to 6" - keep in mind that there will likely be locally higher snowfall totals.
6:30am Update: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Green, Rock and Walworth counties in southern Wisconsin. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Carroll and Whiteside counties while a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry and Ogle counties. All three of these will go into affect this afternoon and last through tonight.
This storm system will have two sides to it: a warm side which will produce thunderstorms and potentially severe weather in East-Central Illinois as well as points east and south, and a cold side which could potentially bring a heavy, wet snow right along the Wisconsin/Illinois border. Low pressure is currently moving out of Kansas and into Missouri this morning which has been producing some strong thunderstorms across central Missouri. That low will move through central Illinois around noon bringing with it light rain showers before intensifying as it moves into southwest Michigan by this evening. The rain will spread in from the southwest to northeast and don't be surprised if there is a mixture of sleet and snow with some of the rain.. By mid-afternoon, likely after 3pm, the rain will begin to change to snow from west to east as the second low moves into the Upper Great Lakes and pulls down cooler weather. Temperatures will be falling into the mid-30s so the snow that does fall will likely be heavy and wet which will reduce visibility this evening. Snowfall rates could be heavy at times as cooling aloft allows the temperatures to fall quickly. This system will quickly move northeast into Michigan by Saturday morning. Winds will increase from the northwest tonight which may cause some blowing and drifting.
Any slight deviation in the track will change the outcome of precipitation. We'll continue to provide update here throughout the day as needed.

Snow potential for Friday increases!
Low pressure tracking out of the Plains today will rapidly intensify as it moves northeast out of Missouri and just to the south of Chicago by Friday afternoon. This type of track is a classic one for heavy snow potential across southern Wisconsin where accumulations could top six inches. Warmer temperatures initially will allow for rain or a mix of rain/snow to fall across southeast Wisconsin and points south early Friday. But, because the low will intensify rapidly as it moves into the lower Great Lakes it will have enough strength to pull down colder air across Wisconsin and possibly into northwest Illinois by late afternoon Friday. The track of this low has shifted a little further south with the recent morning model runs than the evening runs. The potential is there for this accumulating snow to dip even further south across northern Illinois. We'll continue to analyze the data as we receive it today and have another update for you later this afternoon.
Severe threat returns Friday
A developing low pressure system will move out of Missouri and into East-Central Illinois by Friday afternoon. As it does a warm, moist air mass will lift northward ahead of a cold front the same time strong winds in the jet stream move through the lower Ohio River Valley. Hail, strong winds and tornadoes all remain possible during the day Friday. A moderate risk for severe weather has been issued from the Storm Prediction Center for the darker shaded region. For us, rain showers will start the day Friday before switching over to snow Friday evening. It's possible that a few thunderstorms will be found to the south and southeast.
