The beginning of December 2025 started a lot different than previous Decembers, with plenty of cold and snow. In fact, following the last snowfall roughly a week ago we added up to the snow we achieved ALL last winter season! Seems we went headfirst into the winter season.
The average temperature for the first 15 days of the month was a chilly 17.3 degrees, 12.2 degrees below the average month-to-date. Nearly every day this month has fallen below the average. The exception was on the 9th and 10th when temperatures warmed late that Tuesday evening and started off very warm the following morning. Today's high temperature warmed to 34 degrees thanks to sunny skies and a breezy southerly wind. 34 degrees is also the average high for the 16th of December.
Temperatures will hold steady for most of Tuesday evening thanks to an increase in cloud cover. These clouds are in advance of a weak cold front that'll move across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin later this evening. Dry air should keep precipitation chances at a minimum, but a few spots of drizzle can't entirely be ruled out late Tuesday night. As the clouds slowly begin to depart early Wednesday, we should see temperatures briefly fall back into the upper 20s. If clouds hang on a bit longer our warm-up for Wednesday afternoon may be delayed a bit but should reach the mid-30s late in the afternoon. Our overall pattern will flip to a warmer one, dominated by more Pacific driven storm systems rather than Arctic ones. This means a more active jet stream, but one that is pushed further north. We'll likely see plenty of storm systems move across the country, each one drawing up warmth ahead of it and a brief cool down behind it. While the overall trend may be a warmer one to round out the end of the month, it also looks to be a little more of an active one.
