Temperatures reached back to the low 30s Sunday afternoon following another morning spent in the single digits. Those numbers will hold steady through much of the night as our next weather system moves in. This could bring a period of freezing drizzle mainly after 4AM as our surface temperatures will be hovering near or just below freezing. Any light precipitation that falls in liquid form will form a glaze of ice on untreated surfaces through mid-morning.
This freezing drizzle will transition to liquid rain, with some steadier pockets, by the late morning or afternoon as temperatures continue to climb. Even as our air temperature reaches the mid-30s, be cautious for slick spots as pavement temperatures may still be near/below freezing for a bit later. Any lingering rain we see into the afternoon will exit by the evening as drier air moves in.
A winter weather advisory is in effect across Southern Wisconsin from 3AM to 3PM Monday, with the potential for a glaze of ice along with some snow mixed in. Locally, the confidence on any ice accumulation is lower with ever-so-slightly higher temperatures, so there is no advisory in place for Illinois at this time. Slick spots may still be possible across the Stateline, so use caution when on the roads and especially if traveling for Christmas!
Looking ahead to the middle of the week, milder air continues to move in, bringing with it the potential for frequent waves of rain. The confidence on placement and timing of each wave is low at this time, but there will be multiple chances for rain between Tuesday night and next weekend. This will be paired with milder air, including high temperatures in the 30s and 40s. Christmas Day is currently forecast at 38° with a chance for scattered light rain showers.
