No matter where you go in the United States, chances are there has been a tornado that has either touched down or went through somewhere very close to that spot. While some regions of the U.S. are more prone to tornadoes, they have occurred in all 50 states. Yes, even Alaska!
Have you ever wondered how many tornadoes have touched down in Illinois? How about within your county? Well, the Illinois State Water Survey has a very detailed history of tornadoes dating back to 1950 in Illinois, including tornado strength as well as track.
The data from the Illinois State Water Survey goes up to 2010, but we've had a few within the past four years across the region and the first image on the left takes those additional tornadoes into account. Even the one from Carroll County last Tuesday.
The second image on the left shows touchdowns as well as tracks throughout Illinois from 1950-2010. It's interesting to see some of the long tracking tornadoes further downstate.
