Thursday Remains Warm Ahead of Friday's Cool Down and Snow Chances

There was definitely a different feel to the air this morning as many of you prepared to return to your daily routine. Southerly-southwesterly winds hung around the area overnight which slowed down the cooling process. Temperatures this morning started out in the 30s, about 15°-20° warmer compared to 24 hours ago. When you have low temperatures at or above your average highs for early January, that should give you a good idea on how the rest of our day will shape up. Plus, dew points weren't as dry which gave the air that "sulky" feel to it this morning. Now, if you didn't get to enjoy the warmth we experienced yesterday, you have another day to do so as the mild trend continues.

Mostly sunny skies early on will gradually give way to a few more clouds by the afternoon. Highs manage to make it into the mid and even upper 40s. A cold front, which is now placed over southern Minnesota and central Iowa at the moment, is set to move through the Stateline later this afternoon and evening. This will help turn our skies mostly cloudy going into Thursday night. There is also very slim chance that this cold front could squeeze in a passing shower or sprinkle. But odds are very slim as it seems like conditions will stay dry into Friday. This cold front will also bring a subtle shift in wind direction. As winds turn more northwesterly, cooler air filters in. Highs by Friday afternoon will fall back into the upper 30s.

Friday brings with it not only the cooler temperatures, but also the chance for snow. Something that we haven't been accustomed to seeing since the start of meteorological winter on December 1st. A clipper system looks to track into the Stateline from the northwest late in the day, bringing with it a few light snow showers. Accumulations look to remain very low, with most areas receiving less than half an inch. Everything looks to wrap up as we move into Saturday morning.
