Cold November = Cold Winter?

November is officially in the books, and for Rockford, it was the 6th coldest on record since 1906. But does that early blast of cold mean bad news for when winter actually gets here?

We decided to take a look at the five Novembers that were the colder than the one we had this year in the Forest City. Then we took a look at what temperatures did for the following winter. You can check out the findings below:


With the exception of 1976, most of the winters following a cold November were either just below average for temperatures or warmer than normal.

So what about this winter? Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center is giving us some good news for December. Their latest monthly outlook gives the Stateline a 40% chance of seeing warmer than average temperatures for the month of December as a whole. -BA
