Chances for a White Christmas

A cloudy start to this Thursday, but at least it helped our temperatures stay a little warmer this morning in the 30's as opposed to the low 20's.  We're looking to hang on to the cloud cover through the afternoon, with chances for drizzle kicking in around 3pm, where highs will be around 37°.

As we head into the evening our temperatures will drop near freezing, this allowing for more of a wintry mix to take over instead of just drizzle.  We'll see flurries, drizzle, and freezing drizzle with this mix, and this will allow for the roads to be slick this evening so be sure to take it slow on the roads if going out tonight!

Once we get to around 9pm, temperatures will be dropping just below freezing.  This will allow chances for light snow across the Stateline, which will stay with us through the overnight into early Friday morning.

After this low pressure system moves out, lots of cold air is going to filter into our area, drastically cooling us down and cooling us down quickly.  This low will be stacked, which means that what we see at the surface of the earth is the same at the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere.  As you can imagine, this creates a 'wall' of cold air that flows into our area, allowing for the temperature drop.

This will bring temperatures into the 20's for our highs, and then the teens for our lows, with a few days next week looking to see overnights in the single digits.  The cold spell will last from Saturday into the middle of next week, where temperatures seem unlikely to get above freezing.  This means that any snowfall we see during the weekend will stick to the roads for quite some time, allowing for slick conditions.

As we get ready to head into next week, be sure to keep a few things in mind when driving.  First, check your tire pressure more frequently, as cold temperatures cause pressure to deflate more quickly in your tire.

Second, take the time to scrape the ice and snow off of your car.  Yes....it can be a pain and take a while, but it's better to have clear vision when driving than to risk an accident.  Even on a sunny day, the sun will reflect off the ice and snow on your car, and could allow for blinding conditions, dangerous for both yourself and others on the road.

Third, your car is more than likely going to skid at some point with the slick conditions on the way.  If your car does end up skidding, back off the accelerator a little bit and then turn in the direction of the skid to help regain control of your vehicle.
