Thunderstorms with heavy rain came through Monday morning, clearing just in time for the heat and humidity to return in full force by the afternoon. Temperatures were quick to warm into the mid and upper 80s but with the dew point temperature in the low 70s, the heat index was pushed into the mid and upper 90s.
Thunderstorms have developed to the north from Minnesota to Wisconsin and that's where most of the storm activity will remain through the evening and night. An isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out locally but most should remain dry and muggy. Overnight lows will only fall into the low 70s and that will help spring-board temperatures Tuesday back up near 90 degrees. The heat index, however, will rise into the mid and upper 90s making it a very uncomfortable afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms during the afternoon would be our only relief from the humidity Tuesday but the chance for that remains isolated.
Thunderstorm coverage will increase Tuesday evening as a cold front slips south into northern Illinois. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday evening with hail and damaging winds the primary threats.
