Tuesday started with a fair amount of cloud cover as moisture moved into northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. But there were enough breaks to allow for a beautiful sunrise. From the clouds a few showers dotted the skies late in the morning and early afternoon, but both have cleared for most late this afternoon. This, combined with the breezy southerly wind, has allowed afternoon temperatures to reach the mid-80s. Rockford's high reached 86 degrees.
As we head through the evening clouds are beginning to fill back in near the state line, leaving skies mostly cloudy for some. Showers and a few isolated thunderstorms have been ongoing stretching from the central Plains up through northeast Iowa. Severe thunderstorms are likely across central and eastern Iowa this evening, with most of the severe activity remaining west of the Mississippi River. This is where there is a slight risk for severe thunderstorms this evening.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms will move towards the Stateline late Tuesday night with some steady, and at times, heavy rainfall heading into Wednesday morning. Rainfall totals over an inch, possibly nearing two inches, could occur over parts of Iowa and southwest Wisconsin but locally rainfall totals of a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch are likely. Temperatures will remain warm Tuesday night with lows close to 70. Lingering cloud cover Wednesday may keep afternoon temperatures near 80, but if clouds clear a little sooner during the afternoon, then temperatures will warm into the low 80s.
