Big snowfall north with cold to follow

The season's first big snow is slamming the Upper Midwest with parts of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin stuck right in the middle.  Winter Storm Warnings are in place from the Dakotas, eastward to Minnesota and Wisconsin, where over a foot of snow could fall by Tuesday morning.

Low pressure developing on the lee side of the Rockies will move from the central Plains today into northwest Illinois tonight.  A warm front
ahead of the low will allow temperatures to rise into the 50's this afternoon and evening.  Most of today will stay dry until tonight as low pressure and a cold front slip closer.  With temperatures still in the 50's this evening, any precipitation that falls should fall in the form of rain.  After Midnight, temperatures will quickly fall behind the front into Tuesday morning.  A brief rain/snow mix and even a few snow showers will be possible Tuesday morning before temperatures fall into the 30's by the afternoon.  Winds will also turn gusty from the northwest dropping wind chills into the teens by Tuesday night.  It looks like a prolonged period of cold will be in place through next week and possibly into the week of Thanksgiving.
