Tuesday morning weather update

The rain & sleet from earlier this morning is beginning to wind down.  An occasional sprinkle/flurry will remain possible through the morning with temperatures staying in the low to mid 30's.

7:55am Update: Heavy rain falling in north-central Illinois with temperatures in the mid 30's.

Bright banding showing up on radar from Lena to Mt. Carroll likely from sleet falling.  This will soon, if it hasn't already, transition to snow.  The snow will be heavy at times through 9am which could cause a quick quarter inch accumulation on grassy surfaces.  Sidewalks and elevated surfaces could become a little slick.

Viewer reports coming in of sleet beginning to develop west of Freeport from Lena to Stockton.  Transition to sleet likely soon in Freeport, Pearl City, Lanark and Mt. Carroll.

Widespread rain will lift northeast into Rockford within the next half hour.  A transition to sleet and light snow has been occurring in Jo Daviess County back towards the Quad Cities.

First Warn Weather Watcher Tony Honchar is report light rain in Freeport with a current temperature of 35° - falling about a degree/hour.

The main cold front has passed and temperatures this morning have been falling from the upper 40's they were at around Midnight, into the 30's.  A secondary upper level low is currently moving through southern Iowa has been the focus for additional showers, sleet and snow currently moving through eastern Iowa and now crossing over the Mississippi River.  Temperatures in western and northwest Illinois are in the mid to upper 30's, so as this low slides closer to northern Illinois we'll see a few showers initially.  As the mercury slowly drops closer to and below freezing, a transition to sleet and light snow will occur west of Rockford through 8am.

Areas west of a line from Monroe to Freeport to Dixon will experience the mix first and there may be a few slicker spots on the roads, especially the closer you get to the Mississippi River.  We'll likely all experience a mix and even lighter snow through late morning.
