First Day of Meteorological Winter

Happy first day of meteorological winter! While the winter solstice isn't until December 21st, today is the first day of meteorological winter. The months of December, January and February constitute meteorological winter.

There was no snow for the start of meteorological winter, but there was plenty of rain. Showers and thunderstorms will continue throughout the evening hours. The rain will transition over to a wintry mix as temperatures cool during the day on Sunday.

Some of the storms to our south produced a few tornadoes. Much of the severe weather stayed south of I-80.

This picture was from one of the numerous tornadoes over central portions of Illinois this afternoon. The storms weakened before they made it into the Stateline.
