Record warmth Monday afternoon

5:30pm Update: The high temperature in Rockford did reach 71 degrees. This ties the previous record for the 11th of March. The record was also 71 degrees set back in 1990.

Temperatures Monday warmed into the upper 60s, reaching 70 degrees so far in Rockford. The record high for the 11th of March is 71 degrees set back in 1990. We may reach 71 degrees still late this afternoon. If so, that would tie the record for today.

The warmth has returned with the strong southwest wind, at times gusting to 35 mph. The combination of the strong wind, warm temperatures, low dew points/relative humidity, and dry vegetation does heighten the fire risk through sunset.

The strong wind gusts will ease through sunset as temperatures fall into the 40s overnight. Highs on Tuesday will warm back into the low 70s but fall short of the record high of 78 degrees set back in 1990. Southwest winds will also increase, gusting between 30-35 mph through the afternoon. There remains an elevated fire risk for Tuesday afternoon as well, although dew point temperatures will be slightly higher.
