The National Weather Service (NWS) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) are reminding people, "When thunder roars, go indoors," for this year's lightning safety awareness week June 19th-25th. About 55 people are killed and over 1,000 are injured each year across the U.S. by lightning, according to the NWS.
