Remainder of the afternoon
Ongoing thunderstorms will continue to move through Wisconsin and Michigan for the remainder of the day. Because of the rain and associated cloud cover temperatures further north have stayed a bit cooler. We'll continue with the filtered sunshine throughout the afternoon as temperatures rise into the low 90s.
Surface analysis at noon indicates moisture continues to stream in ahead of a weak cool front that stretches through Minnesota and northern Iowa. The filtered sun will help to build instability throughout the rest of the day which will later fuel a few storms this evening and overnight. Thunderstorms should begin to develop either right ahead or along the front as it slowly moves east/southeast. Even though there isn't much support from our jet stream for big storm development, when the front moves into a relatively moist and unstable atmosphere that should be enough to generate a few storms. Biggest threats would be heavy rainfall (the moisture content in our atmosphere is fairly high) and gusty winds. The majority of the afternoon should remain dry, however, I think 6pm or 7pm is when we might start to see a few storms pop up.
Overnight into Saturday
The weakening cold front will stall across the area tonight and into Saturday morning as the winds within the jet stream begin to run parallel to the front. Going into Saturday morning this could lead to a heavy rainfall potential.
By Saturday afternoon the winds within the jet stream will have become a little more organized and as they move over the front the storm threat will persist into Saturday evening. Now since there will be a little more upper level support, Saturday may hold a greater threat for stronger thunderstorms. As a second cold front moves in late Saturday night this will help to end the storm threat and pull down cooler air towards the end of the weekend.
