As Meteorologist Candice King said in a previous post, precipitation-type will be a challenge to forecast during this next round of winter weather. The area of low pressure that will be passing to our southeast on Tuesday evening will initially throw warmer air in our direction, followed by colder air on Wednesday morning coming in on its back side. Plus, a chilly area of high pressure to our north will complicate the Stateline's temperature profile with its shallow layer of cold, dry air trying to hold-on at the surface.
However, one thing that's growing more certain as time moves-on is whatever precipitation that does fall will be light. Our forecast models generally spit 0.05" of precipitation or less at Rockford Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. So although we're not "out of the woods" for a slippery time on the roadways Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, our chances of significant icing look slim. At this point, I'm most concerned about bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads. Stay tuned though! --TS
