The month of April has, for most, gone rain free and the effects of that are starting to be felt. The latest drought monitor from the National Drought Mitigation Center shows drier than normal conditions starting to develop over northwest and southern Illinois with moderate and severe drought conditions in Iowa. Despite the above average snowfall we had this winter, we really haven't experienced much rain and that drier than normal trend will hold through the remainder of the week.
Drier than normal conditions have also developed in Wisconsin, despite some of the snow they received this winter season. While the rain free weather has been pleasant, the dry conditions are not good for spring planting. And if the drier than normal conditions continue for too long, it could be a problem for farmers getting into the fields and for the crops to start growing. Severe drought conditions have been reported across the Plains.
Thursday's rainfall won't add up to much with maybe a few tenths of an inch falling with a weak cool front during the day. The possibility of a steadier rain does exist for the latter part of this weekend as more gulf moisture is pulled in ahead of a cold front late Saturday and Sunday.
