Latest drought monitor shows some good and some bad

The latest drought monitor from the National Drought Mitigation Center shows some improvement but also an increase in drought conditions in the Midwest.  The heavy, thunderstorm rain we received last week helped a little with the drier than normal conditions in north-central Illinois but central Illinois could still use some rain.  Moderate drought conditions have expanded across the middle of the state with nearly 40% of Illinois considered under a moderate drought and 2% of extreme western Illinois under severe drought conditions.

The same can be found further north in Wisconsin.  While a little dent was made in the abnormally dry conditions, moderate and severe drought conditions increased from last week to this week.  Looking ahead, the heaviest rainfall through the weekend appears to remain confined to the north closer to the jet stream.  A few thunderstorms could move through late Saturday and again Sunday night.  While rain from thunderstorms is nice a good, soaking rain would be great!
