Snowmelt Putting An End To Some Impressive Streaks

We've seen quite a bit of snow this winter, and with exceptionally cold temperatures, most of that snow hasn't gone anywhere... until this week, that is. Now that the snow is starting to give way, check out these stats from the National Weather Service.

Over the course of this winter, Rockford has seen 25 straight days with at least 8" of snow on the ground, 78 straight days with at least 4" of snow on the ground, and 92 straight days with at least 2" of snow on the ground. The 2" and 4" streaks were just broken this week. While none of these streaks were record setters, a few came close. Here's a look at the top 5 for each:

Consecutive days with 2" of snow on the ground
1.) 107 Days - Ended 1979
2.) 97 Days - Ended 1962
3.) 92 Days - Ended 2014
4.) 89 Days - Ended 1978
5.) 59 Days - Ended 1984

Consecutive days with 4" of snow on the ground
1.) 103 Days - Ended 1979
2.) 78 Days - Ended 2014
3.) 59 Days - Ended 1984
4.) 58 Days - Ended 1978
5.) 52 Days - Ended 1985

Consecutive days with 8" of snow on the ground
1.) 75 Days - Ended 1979
2.) 40 Days - Ended 1960
3.) 34 Days - Ended 1970
4.) 25 Days - Ended 2014
5.) 23 Days - Ended 1959

The snow pack should continue to melt with six of the next seven days looking at highs above the freezing mark. That green stuff you're starting to see is called "grass". Enjoy it! -BA
