On This Day in Weather History

Did you know? -- The town of Codell, KS is often remembered on May 20 for
three rather infamous years. You see.. the town unfortunately was hit three
years in-a-row by tornadoes; 1916, 1917, and 1918. This is statistically
amazing but also tragic. Each tornado was stronger than the last. While the
1916 storm was rated F2 (on the original Fujita Scale) and caused only farm
damage with no injuries..the 1917 event was considerably larger and, as an F3, also considered "intense" (the original Fujita scale classified F3-F5
tornadoes intense, but also catagorized, appropriately, the rare F4 and F5 tornadoes as "violent" as well) and capable of considerable damage. The enormous multiple-vortex tornado was said to be up to 2 miles wide! The final tornado in the trio, in 1918, struck once again on May 20! It was
not only "violent" ( an F4 ) but also, tragically, deadly! No one died in Codell, but 5 people were killed in a home before the storm entered town.  The tornado would kill a total of 9 people along the 60 mile track.
