Much Warmer Weekend.... Keep an Eye Out for Storms

A warm front stretches east/west from a developing low over northeastern Colorado across Kansas, central Missouri to the southern tip of Illinois. The warm front will move northward in the next 24 hours into the Stateline area as the low begins to intensify and pull northeast out of the Rockies. Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will ride up over the front given our region a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight and on Saturday. With the front lying across the area on Saturday night, there will be a good chance of thunderstorms. There is a slight chance that some of those thunderstorms may reach severe limits with damaging winds and large hail. The area most likely to get severe thunderstorms on Saturday evening is off to the west and northwest of the Greater Rockford area. A surge of summerlike air will sweep across the Stateline on Sunday pushing temperatures into the 80's. The air will be very humid too with lots of Gulf moisture available. When the cold front pushes into the area on Sunday night there is a good chance of widespread severe thunderstorm activity with damaging winds and large hail.

  1. Hi Eric, what are the chances of tornadoes in the Rockford area?

  2. Carol,
There is a possibility that we could see tornadoes Sunday, especially if the storms develop more towards the afternoon than late evening. The highest threats will likely be damaging winds and hail. But the tornado threat is there. We'll keep updating things here throughout the day today and tomorrow. - CK
