Meteorological winter has ended and the numbers have been added and this winter will go down as Rockford's third warmest winter on record (since record keeping began back in 1906). I do have to give a kudos to Chief Meteorologist Ty Shesky because last week, after doing some of his own math, also came to this conclusion.
The average temperature during meteorological winter, keep in mind we use the period December 1st through the end of February as winter because climatologically those are the coldest months, was 30.2°. The warmest winter on record was back in 1931-1932 where the average temperature was 32.0°. Some of you may even remember the winter of 2001-2002 as it was a mild one with an average temperature of 30.9°
Chicago had their 9th warmest on record with an average high of 32.8°. Now, why was Chicago lower than Rockford? Their record keeping goes all the way back to 1872!
Here are some other cities across the nation and how they stacked up this winter season:
(provided by the surrounding National Weather Service Offices)
Cleveland, OH 7th warmest
Fargo, ND 7th warmest
Grand Rapids, MI 2nd warmest
Green Bay, WI 2nd warmest
Kansas City, MO 7th warmest
Milwaukee, WI 5th warmest
Minneapolis, MN 4th warmest
St. Louis, MO 6th warmest
