Monday Morning Snow Update

1:10pm Update: A heavier band of snow is moving south of Rockford through Davis Junction, Stillman Valley and Mt. Morris. Visibility has dropped to a mile or less in some of the heavier snow bands.  Light accumulations will be found on cars and grassy surfaces, but most will remain under half an inch.  Snowfall will begin to wind down from north to south after 3pm.

Light snow continues to fall in Southern Wiscosnin and if it hasn't already, it will soon transition over to snow in Northern Illinois.

10:40am Update: The cold front has already passed with temperatures quickly falling into the middle 30s!  Rain has been reported in Esmond and Kingston, but a mixture of rain and snow has been falling to the north in Wisconsin.  Snow has begun to move into northwest Illinois and will continue to move south through early afternoon.

9:20am Update: Light drizzle falling in Monroe & Janesville may be mixing with a few partially melted snowflakes as of 9:20am.

A very strong Arctic cold front already in Southern Wisconsin will move into Northern Illinois by 10am.  A mixture of rain and snow has been falling in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota as temperatures have fallen into the 30's behind the front.  A chilly rain will begin to fall in Southern Wisconsin from Monroe to Janesville around 9am/9:30am and then change over to wet snow later this morning.  By early afternoon all precipitation will be light snow.  Accumulations are expected to remain minor, between 0.5" and 1.0", and mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces.  Ground temperatures a few inches below the surface are in the middle to upper 30's, so as the snow falls some of it will likely melt before getting a chance to accumulate.  However, elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses may become slick once the temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall.  Heavier bands of snow will reduce visibility and may cause a small, quick accumulation.

Temperatures this morning are in the low to mid 40's but by 5pm the mercury will fall into the upper 20's.  As skies begin to clear tonight lows will drop into the upper teens before only rising into the low 30's Tuesday afternoon.
