January Recap And Looking Forward to This Week's Weather

If you guessed that January was colder and snowier than average, you'd be right! Average temps in Rockford for the month was only 12.0°, over 9° below where we should have been.  This January goes in the books as the eighth coldest on record, since the readings began in 1905.  As for snow, we saw a total of 15.3", which is 5" above normal.  This was the 14th snowiest January on record.

As for this first full week of February, we're going to see more snow and more cold; so the wintry trend continues. (If Woodstock's Groundhog, "Willie", is right, it'll last for another six weeks!)

Radar Snapshot Tuesday Night
Monday looks quiet but by Tuesday afternoon, our next snow system advances from the southwest.  There's been a lot of talk about this system and how much snow we're going to get.  Computer models a week ago were indicating that it could pack quite a punch, dropping over a foot of snow! But, here at the First Warn Weather center, we don't publicize those numbers because a snow amount forecast 7 days out is almost always incorrect and over-hyped.  The low pressure system will track farther south than earlier anticipated, taking the core of the moisture with it.  From Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning it looks like we'll see an adequate amount of snow, possibly a little more than we saw this past weekend. - MT
