Raditional cooling was in full force last night as overnight lows took a big tumble! In fact, Rochelle and Sterling had lows in the mid -20's! Now, you may be looking at this map and wonder why DeKalb or even some of the other surrounding areas didn't get as cold. The reason: the cold air drained (or settled) into low-lying areas like Rochelle. The temperature sensor at Rochelle is at a slightly lower elevation than some of the other areas and since cold air is very dense, it tends to 'pool' in those lower lying areas. This often causes the temperature reading to be lower than that of the surrounding areas.
Tonight isn't expected to be as cold. Temperatures will drop once the sun sets this evening but as clouds advance from the west ahead of low pressure, the temperature should actually begin to rise into Tuesday morning.
