Welcome to winter! Unofficially, that is. The cold is here and it looks like it's going to stick around for quite some time. The jet stream remains buckled right over the U.S. which keeps the cold spilling in from the Arctic. Whenever these types of weather patterns develop, they're very hard to break and can sometimes last longer than a week. By next weekend, at the earliest, we may begin to see this pattern break down but not before another push of true Arctic air arrives for next Monday and Tuesday.
Temperatures right now are in the low to mid 20's with wind chills in the low teens. Good news, over the next couple of days the wind will begin to ease some, but our morning temperatures will drop so we'll keep the wind chills in the single digits and low teens for the start of the weekend.
Low pressure moving south of Illinois and a cold front moving through the Midwest Saturday and Saturday night will bring a chance for light snow to southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. At this point, it doesn't look like much, but it is something we'll keep an eye on in the days to come.
What's more impressive is the cold that will be moving in beginning Sunday night. Temperatures will fall even further than the low 30's we're forecasting this week. Highs Monday and Tuesday will only be in the upper 20's. We won't break any record cold highs Monday, but we could tie - and possibly break - the record cold high for next Tuesday!
