If it's going to be cold, it might as well snow. Right? Some may agree, and whether you like it or now, there is snow in the forecast. The first round of snow came down Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. While it wasn't much, a few tenths of an inch at most, the snow for the weekend does look like it will add up to an inch or two Saturday night. With the cold air in place straight through the weekend, low pressure pulling in Pacific moisture will track east from California today and tomorrow crossing the Midwest Saturday. Saturday morning will start off dry, but cold, with temperatures down in the mid teens. By late Saturday afternoon, the snow will begin and may pick up a bit in intensity overnight Saturday and early Sunday. Good news, it will be coming during a time when there isn't much travel on the roads. Bad news, it will likely generate more wintry travel Sunday morning so keep that in mind if you're out early. As of right now, an inch or two of snow will be likely with snow to liquid ratios remaining higher than the average 10:1. By Sunday evening, most of the snow will be out of here but the cold will begin to settle in. Temperatures will only be in the 20's for highs on Monday and Tuesday.
The recent and sudden cold snap has really done a number on the temperature of the ground. Earlier this week 4" soil temperatures were in the mid and upper 40's Tuesday following Monday's 60's. Now, soil temperatures are reading in the low 30's and will continue to cool with the air temperature. This means any snow that does fall has a higher likelihood of sticking, just like what we experienced Thursday morning.
We'll continue to fine tune the weekend forecast,
but looks like we may be doing some shoveling over the weekend.
