Clouds and fog hold temperatures in the 30s for some Monday

Temperatures Monday afternoon ranged from the middle to upper 40s across northwest Illinois, to the middle and upper 30s across north-central Illinois. The reasoning for the 'cooler weather', persistent low clouds and fog.

Fog developed late Sunday night/early Monday morning and was slow to clear for some throughout Monday afternoon. In some areas, freezing fog formed as temperatures fell to the low 20s.

Clouds were slow to clear throughout the afternoon, hanging on right along the I-39 corridor until just an hour or two before sunset. To the west, higher level clouds are now beginning to move in and have turned our skies mostly cloudy. We'll hold on to the cloud cover through the evening with fog developing once again tonight. Overnight lows will fall into the 20s.

Tuesday could be similar to Monday, especially if fog and low clouds last into the afternoon. If not, highs will warm into the upper 40s just like they did to the west Monday afternoon. Patchy fog will once again be possible Tuesday night, but a southerly wind Wednesday will help warm temperatures enough to keep any lingering fog at bay, and warm afternoon temperatures Wednesday close to 50 degrees.
