Light snow moves in Thursday night

For most Wednesday night and Thursday morning it was a chilly rain that came down, but there were a few snow showers that occurred along the state line. That precipitation didn't last long after sunrise, but the clouds did stick around through mid-morning.

A strong northwest wind put a little chill in the air as temperatures reached the upper 30s and low 40s. Rockford's high made it to 43 degrees, after starting off in the mid-30s. The cloud cover from the morning cleared leaving us with mostly sunny skies for most of the afternoon.

But now the cloud cover has moved back in, and light snow isn't too far away. Radar shows the snow out west in Iowa, slowly moving into west-central Illinois. But dew point temperatures currently in the teens has limited a lot of that from reaching the ground. It'll take some time before we see the atmosphere saturate, that is expected to occur during the overnight.

Flurries and light snow will continue into Friday, but the highest chance for accumulating snowfall will occur outside of the immediate area. However, minor accumulations are possible along the I-88 corridor from Whiteside, Lee, southern Ogle, and DeKalb counties. The flurries may cause some slick conditions through the morning as temperatures sit in the mid-20s.

Cloud cover will stick around through the afternoon with skies turning partly cloudy by evening. Northwest winds will remain strong, at times gusting to 25 mph through Friday night. As temperatures fall into the teens early Saturday wind chills will fall even further, dropping into the single digits - and possibly even below zero for a time - early Saturday morning. Highs on Saturday will only warm to 30 degrees, but a quick turnaround in temperatures is expected Sunday when the mercury climbs back into the low 40s. 40s and 50s are in the forecast next week.
