Fog set to return Tuesday night

9:30pm UPDATE: A DENSE FOG ADVISORY has now been issued for all of northern Illinois until Wednesday morning. For Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Carroll, and Whiteside counties the advisory will last until 9am. For Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, and McHenry counties the advisory will last through 11am.

Visibility has quickly fallen Tuesday evening, dropping under half a mile in many locations. Freezing fog may also occur as temperatures sit near or just below freezing.

EARLIER POST: Just like Monday the fog and low clouds Tuesday afternoon were slow to clear for most, holding afternoon temperatures in the 30s for Rockford. Temperatures across northwest Illinois warmed into the middle and upper 40s, while portions of Iowa soared into the 50s thanks to sunshine!

While most of the fog has cleared, there are still some low clouds holding on southeast of Rockford. Visibility isn't terribly low, but we are likely to see fog redevelop this evening under the cloud cover near Rochelle and DeKalb. And just like the last couple of nights, dense fog will be possible early Wednesday.

Increasing cloud cover, along with an increasing southerly wind, should prevent the fog from lasting as long Wednesday afternoon allowing temperatures to warm into the middle 40s. Wednesday night remains mild with overnight lows in the low 40s, and highs on Thursday reaching the middle 50s. Rain showers - and perhaps a rumble of thunder or two - are likely Thursday afternoon and evening.
