Wintry weather returns for some Thursday morning

Warmth will continue to be in the air for those doing something special for Valentine's Day.

Ahead of tonight's wintry mix mess, all remains mild and quiet with highs in upper 40s. Skies will be sun-filled at first, caving to a mostly cloudy sky by the time the evening commute arrives.

Earlier this morning, the National Weather Service placed areas across central and southern Wisconsin under a Winter Weather Advisory. It's in these areas where impacts will be highest as snow accumulations could range from 2" to as much as 5".

Locally, the primary type of precipitation at the start of the event will be rain. As temperatures inch closer to the freezing mark, rain will mix with snow or even changeover to wet snow Thursday morning. If any snow were to fall, it would mostly accumulate on grassy surfaces, leaving most roads wet for Thursday morning commute. With that said, be mindful and keep an eye out for any slushy spots if you plan to travel. Precipitation should wrap up around sunrise, with clouds decreasing into the mid-day hours. Highs will trend cooler in the upper 30s.

Guidance then shows a secondary and slightly weaker system sliding into the Midwest Friday. Question marks remain this morning, especially with the storm's track. This will be the determining factor into who gets the best chance for snow.

For now, a scattered round of snow showers are possible into Friday afternoon, with highs just hitting the 30-degree mark. Temperatures continue to cool into Saturday before gradually climbing back into the low 40s early next week.
