Rainfall roundup: Extended heat and humidity not helping the crops

The latest crop report released from the USDA Monday afternoon says crops were growing at a steady pace last week and were looking pretty good.  But, we need rain in order to keep that steady pace going this week.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll get much rain this week as the mercury climbs into the low 90s.  The lack of precipitation combined with the high heat and humidity isn't good for the crops. On average, corn needs about an inch of rain per week to do well.  While we received a significant amount of rain the last two weeks in June, July has started off a little more on the drier side.

So far we've received just a little over an inch of rain as of July 15th putting us 0.87" below our monthly average.  With only a few very isolated thunderstorms in the forecast today through Thursday the outlook for rain isn't looking too good.  It's not going to be until a cold front passes Friday evening that a greater threat for rain will arrive.  Even then if the atmosphere remains too capped (where thunderstorms don't form) we may not end up with that much rain until maybe next week.
