Winter's cold won't ease up!

You don't need me, Brandon or Max to tell you it's been cold this winter season!  But, did you know that Rockford has had 63 days where the temperature has been below 45°?  We could actually make a run for the top ten with the cold expected this week and next week.  In fact, it really doesn't look like things will warm anytime soon.  The record is 114 days back during the winter season of 1978/1979.

Skies stayed cloudy overnight and there were even a few flurries that were able to make it to the ground.  Now that the clouds have cleared, the temperatures have dropped and we've been dropping ever since.  Under partly cloudy skies, temperatures will only rise into the middle and upper single digits.  The record cold high for today is 3°, set back in 1982.  The temperature at midnight was 2° and while we'll like get above
3°, it probably won't be by much.

Overnight lows will once again drop below zero with wind chills approaching -25 degrees.  More subzero nights are coming up next week: Sunday night and then again Monday night.

  1. It was mentioned on Thursday on the 5 PM weather that there were 18 days of subzero readings so far this winter. I count 25 going by the NWS site for temps measured at the airport with 8 subzeros in December, 14 in January, and now 3 in February. Candace King had written my friend last week the record for zero or below days in a winter was 45, but I don't remember what winter season that was. It also appears there are at least 3 or 4 more coming which would take us to almost 30 days with readings below 0.

  2. Hey Marty! Just to clarify... there have been 18 days with subzero temps in 2014. You are correct about the winter total. Including today (Thursday), there have been 26 days with subzero temps for the entire season.

Here are the records for most subzero days in Rockford:
    In a year: 45 days (1963)
    In a winter: 38 days (1976-1977)

Hope that clears up any confusion! -BA
