Record Breaking Sunday

Can't beat temperatures in the 50's and 60's in the middle of December, right?  While I know some of you are waiting for the snow and cold, so far the month of December has produced anything but.  And this past weekend was no exception.

The high temperature Sunday reached 62 degrees!  Amazing that it got that warm, but what's even more amazing is it occurred before sunrise - at 5:31am!  Since then, numbers have been holding steady in the upper 50's and low 60's.  Sunday night will be mild as well.  Temperatures won't drop off much from their current readings as of 7:30pm - in the upper 50's.  Very early this morning the low temperature was recorded at 52 degrees.  Since temperatures are not expected to drop below 52 degrees before midnight, that number will go down as our low for Sunday.  This also breaks the record warm low temperature of 40 degrees set all the way back in 1920.

Another record falling from the books is the five consecutive day stretch of 50 degrees during the month of December.  Previously, only two Decembers had five or more consecutive days of 50 degrees (or higher): December 1st-7th, 1916 and December 2nd-6th, 2001.  According to the Chicago National Weather Service, with a high of 62 degrees Sunday afternoon it is now the latest five day (or more) stretch of 50 degree days on record in Rockford.  With the high temperature expected to be reached early Monday morning - and that number will be in the 50's as well - December 2015 will be the second longest overall stretch of 50 degree days for the month!

Other record temperatures during this warmth:
Tied record high on Thursday, December 10th - 57°, tied 57° set back in 1911
Record warm low temperature of 46° Saturday night.  Previous record was 43° set back in 1968

Temperatures this week will fall through the 40's, 30's and even the 20's by the end of the week.  The storm system bringing us the rain Sunday doesn't have much cold air behind it.  That's why when it passes Monday night, temperatures are not expected to drop much.  Our second system, however, will have cold air.  Enough cold air to bring accumulating snow to the middle of the country.  Even though temperatures will be cooling to the 20's later this week, we'll still be closer to our average high than any other day this week.  And even that shot of cold won't last.  We'll rise right back to the 30's, or above, late next weekend.
