Smoke behind the cold front
Looking at both visible satellite and surface observations from Iowa to Wisconsin, there has been considerable haze developing behind a strong cold front late this afternoon and evening. The reason: smoke from the wildfires in Canada! Visibility has actually dropped down to only a couple miles in far northern Wisconsin, and reports of the smell of smoke have come in as close as eastern Iowa. As the cold front passes, the cooler and dense air is pulling the smoke from the north closer to the surface.
I'm not too sure if the smell of smoke or haze will remain once the front passes southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois a little before Midnight, but those who may have a respiratory condition that could be aggravated by the smoke should remain indoors. You'll likely want to stay inside anyways because it's been so humid out. If you do smell any smoke later tonight, please let us know. You can email the First Warn Weather Team: weather@wtvo.com
