It was a little late start for farmers in Northern Illinois for the start of fieldwork and corn planting, but so far farmers have been chugging along.
Last week wasn't the most ideal week across the state of Illinois for fieldwork. Rainy and cool weather allowed for only two suitable days of fieldwork, but the later start hasn't seemed to hurt Illinois farmers. Corn planted so far is at 66 percent, up almost 10 percent from this time last year. While it will take another couple weeks before most of the corn emerges, about a quarter of what has been planted has emerged. This is likely a little further south of Northern Illinois.
Soybean planting will begin within the next week or two as that typically occurs at the beginning of May. Let's hope farmers can get most of their corn planted within this next week. Click here for more information.
