The pattern will turn significantly colder by the end of the week, weekend and into next week with a few chances for even some wintry weather, the first of which could arrive as early as Thursday night.
A deepening low pressure system in the middle part of the atmosphere - known as a mid-level trough - will strengthen over the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest Thursday afternoon and evening. At the same time low pressure at the surface will develop along the Gulf states and move into Ohio by Friday afternoon. Moisture from this system will run into the cold air situated over the Midwest and Great Lakes Thursday evening and overnight, likely bringing light snow into northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
Temperatures Thursday night will drop into the 20's and only rise into the mid 30's Friday afternoon. Light accumulating snow is likely into Friday morning, but right now it looks like totals should be under one inch. Roads may be slick for the morning commute, and then again Friday evening with the arrival of another low pressure system. This one looks to have more of an impact over Iowa and west-central Illinois during that time, but a shift east could bring some minor accumulating snow back into the Stateline by Friday evening.
