Skies are cloudy over northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin but the snow is on the way. It's not going to be a major snow event, but the first measurable and sticking snow usually comes with a few headaches for commuters.
The atmosphere just a couple thousand feet above the surface is still pretty dry, so as the snow begins to move in from the southwest it'll likely evaporate initially before reaching the ground. But that evaporation will work to saturate the atmosphere with snow beginning to develop around Midnight. The majority of the snow will come down between 2am/3am and 7am, with light snow and flurries lasting into the afternoon.
Snow totals will be right around one inch for most, but some totals could near one and a half inches across north-central and northeast Illinois. Surface temperatures (air temperatures) are right around freezing and likely won't drop too much heading into the night. Initially, the snow may melt on contact before beginning to accumulate. Most of the accumulation will take place on grassy and elevated surfaces, with untreated roads and bridges/overpasses possibly becoming slick by Friday morning. Light snow and even a few flurries will linger into the afternoon before coming to an end Friday night.
