Heavy snow comes to an end Sunday morning, but blowing and drifting snow possible during the day

The heavy snow from overnight Saturday is coming to an end but the impacts will still be felt for the next several hours as crews continue to work to clear the roads. As of 7am, roads across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin are still snow-covered making travel difficult early this morning. But conditions will begin to improve by mid to late morning. However, there may be a little ice under some of the snow once cleared so be careful when out and about.

We'll slowly start to see some sunshine as strong high pressure builds in for the afternoon, but it does look like some cloud cover will stick around. Temperatures in the 20s won't rise much, but in fact fall through the afternoon thanks to colder air situated up to our north.

North winds are also starting to increase, not too strong at the moment, but gusts nearing 25 mph during the afternoon will cause blowing and drifting snow. This will be especially problematic on east/west roads in the open and rural areas.

The snow that came down was light and fluffy which allowed it to accumulate quickly, especially within the heavier snow bands during the overnight. Snowfall totals (from what we've

received so far) range between 4-7 inches. The accumulating snow is done for the region as high pressure will now begin to move in from the north. This will cause temperatures to hold steady through the morning before dropping slightly during the afternoon and evening. We'll end up in the teens by mid to late afternoon. Wind chills will fall below zero by 5pm, remaining below zero through late evening. A wind shift to the southeast and increasing cloud cover will push wind chills back above zero Monday morning.
