Ups and downs continue ahead of Christmas week warm up

Thursday's strong cold front brought a little bit of everything to the Stateline. Dense fog, heavy rain, gusty winds, and now bitter cold.

Temperatures out the door are sitting 25 to as much as 35 cooler than 24 hours ago. Most locales are waking up in the upper single digits. But when you factor in this morning's gusty westerly wind, wind chill values are sitting well below zero. Pack those layers if you are heading out the door early!

Winds will be strongest early, subsiding by the time we get into the afternoon. With high pressure moving in behind Thursday's strong cold front, today features a little bit more sunshine. However, today's cold start will pave the way for a very cold afternoon, leaving high temperatures in the low 20s. Wind chill values will remain in the single digits.

The weekend is looking mainly quiet. There is going to be another cold front pushing through, mainly late Saturday into Saturday night. Ahead of it may come the chance for a scattered rain/snow mix. Otherwise, cloud cover Saturday will clear out, allowing temps to bottom out into Sunday morning. We should wind up in the lower teens, with temperatures only peaking in the upper 20s Sunday afternoon.

Forecast models then show a stronger high pressure system pushing east before Christmas. This will allow warmer flow to take over, allowing afternoon highs to climb into the upper 30s Monday, then low 40s for Tuesday and Wednesday. Christmas at the moment is looking even warmer, with 50s possible!
