Next round of accumulating snow arrives Saturday evening

The active weather pattern continues into the weekend with our next chance for some accumulating snow beginning Saturday evening. Much of the day Saturday will be dry with temperatures again pushing well into the mid/upper 20s. But snow will begin moving into Northwestern Illinois and Southwestern Wisconsin after 7-8PM.

Light to steady snow showers will carry us through the night and into Sunday morning. At the steadiest, snow may come down at a clip of around 0.5-0.75" per hour. This will be enough to coat the cold surfaces with a dusting of snow rather quickly, even treated surfaces. Light or steady snow showers will persist through about 8-9AM Sunday morning before things dry out by mid-day.

The weather system will be losing some steam as it approaches the area, leading to lesser snow totals the further East you travel. All told, between 2-4" of snow may come down across much of the area. This will be a fluffier snow than those we have seen as of late, with snow-to-liquid ratios around 12:1 or 15:1. With only a quarter inch of liquid precipitation coming down, most will see between 2-4" of snow. Far Western parts of the viewing area may inch closer to 4" or more depending on track of the system and how much moisture it brings.

Much of Iowa is now under Winter Weather Advisories with some under Winter Storm Warnings beginning Saturday evening. Lesser confidence of snow impacting travel conditions around here due to the mainly overnight and weekend window, so the advisory may or may not be expanded into Northwestern Illinois. But the forecast remains the same either way: 2-4" of accumulating snow beginning late Saturday evening and ending Sunday morning.
