Holiday preview: Warming up in time for Christmas

After a much colder start to the month of December, we look to end the month on a much warmer note. The jet stream which drives our main weather patterns will lift to the North next week. This will allow a much milder air mass of Pacific origins to settle in over the week of Christmas, resulting in above average temperatures for much of that time.

Afternoon highs will be on a bit of a roller coaster pattern heading into this upcoming weekend but will be on the rise to the 30s then 40s by early next week. On average, high temperatures are closer to the low 30s this time of year.

The above average trends look to take us through the end of the month, as the Climate Prediction Center gives us a 60-80% chance to see above average temperatures from at least the 23rd through the 27th. That indicates that 40s will likely become more common that week rather than the typical 20s and 30s this time of year.

While Christmas Day is just out of reach of our 7-day forecast, we currently expect the afternoon high to be similar to if not a bit warmer than Tuesday and Wednesday before it. Temperature should reach well into the 40s under likely more clouds than sun. Clouds may result in some light rain, particularly Christmas evening into the 26th.
