From Spring-Like Warmth to Winter's Chill - All In One Day

Despite the cloud cover and fog Wednesday temperatures continue to warm through the mid and upper 40's, likely peaking into the low 50's Thursday morning.  It'll feel very spring-like during the first half of Thursday, but more winter-like by days end.

A very powerful cold front will move through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin during the day on Thursday.  The storm system responsible for the cold front will help pull down another cold air mass from the north causing widespread snow to fall through the Plains.

Winter Weather Advisories (in purple) extend all the way down to Kansas, as Winter Storm Warnings (in pink) have been issued from Wisconsin down through Iowa.  Several inches of snow are possible through Thursday afternoon over much of the Plains and Upper Midwest.

As the cold front passes Thursday afternoon cold air will begin to spill into northern Illinois, taking temperatures from the 40's, down to 30 degrees around 5pm Thursday evening.  Scattered rain showers will be likely for most through early afternoon, but as the temperature drops a mixture of sleet and rain, and perhaps light freezing rain, may be possible.

Overnight lows will fall into the 20's and then eventually into the teens by Friday morning.  With the quick drop in temperatures and plenty of moisture around from the rain and snow melt, icy spots are likely during the overnight Thursday and into Friday morning.  This will most likely impact the Friday morning commute.

Highs heading into the weekend will be limited to the teens and low 20's, with overnight lows back into the single digits and below zero wind chills.
