It was definitely a colder end to the work week as temperatures only hovered around 20° this afternoon. Luckily, they won't change much as we go through the rest of the night, as southerly winds will keep pulling warmer air into our area. However, with that southerly air comes moisture, which will be a big factor this weekend.
As we go through the rest of the evening we'll continue to see those light snow showers push eastward, expected to arrive in Rockford after 8pm. Those clear out by midnight, and we'll get a break before more snow showers move in Saturday morning after 7am.
The warm front associated with this system will stay north, but unfortunately the low pressure center will be moving towards us, increasing instability and allowing the snow showers to dip into our area. By the time this round ends, which will be around 3pm, we can expect anywhere from .5 to 1 inch of snow.
We'll get a break until after 4pm, when the second round of snow is expected to move in. That low will travel east pretty quickly, bringing a cold front through our area Saturday evening. This will generate more snow showers, which are expected to stay with us all the way into Sunday. By the time we reach Sunday morning, this round will have brought around 1.5 inches in addition to the .5 to 1 inch that'll fall by Saturday afternoon.
By the time we get to the end of the weekend, a high pressure system will travel from the north to keep the cold air in our area for next week. However, for those snow-lovers, another low pressure system will move in to start the work week, bringing us yet another round of snow. More snow is also expected by the end of the next week.
Looks like the Groundhog was right! At least for this week.
