Tropical Storm Tomas
Yet another tropical storm has formed in the Atlantic basin this autumn. Tropical Storm Tomas is located north of South America, and is travelling nearly parallel to the north coast of that continent at 15 mph. Tomas currently has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, so it's a strong tropical storm. And Tomas does have the potential to strengthen further as it is moving over warm water. However, one competing factor to its strengthening in the near term is some dry air just to the west of Tomas. The Windward Islands are first in line to feel Tomas' impact, which will be heavy rain and high surf. Tomas will have to be watched next week as it heads into the Caribbean Sea. --TS
