Another chill coming late next week

The weakening cold front that will pass late Sunday will stall to our south early next week and be the focus for a wave of low pressure to move along as strong winds within the jetstream push it all the way down into the southwest.  This low will pull in more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and likely bring a good amount of rainfall to the area beginning as early as Monday night and lasting through Wednesday.  This first image on the left is a plot of the sea level pressure and 850mb temperatures (in °C) for next Wednesday night.  The 'blue' coloring you see moving into the Midwest are temperatures that have fallen below 0°C - meaning much colder air behind the low.

The next image is of the same time frame but of the American GFS model.  For the most part it has the low is somewhat of a similar position (although the two take different tracks to get there) with cold air falling in behind as well.  I bring these two images up because while the tracks of these two lows are different, for the most part they agree that there will be cold air coming in - enough cold air that there could be a change over to a rain/snow mix or just plain snow Wednesday night into Thursday.  Now before you go and buy the shovel or snow blower keep in mind that this is several days and out things will likely change.  If we get a lot of rain ahead of this storm there might not be enough moisture to produce significant snow once the low passes.

Stay tuned....
