Thursday afternoon weather update

11:35pm Update:  An Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory has been issued for Rock and Green Counties until 1:30pm.  Radar estimates of up to an inch and a half of rain has already fallen in northern Green County.  Additional rainfall of another inch to inch and a half is possible while these storms persist.  Flooding is very dangerous, especially at night!  Remember to never drive through a flooded roadway.  Some area roads may still experience some flooding by early Friday morning.

Active thunderstorms will continue to move northeast from the Quad Cities to Janesville.  The Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Green and Rock counties has been canceled, but storms will continue to produce heavy rain.

NEW: Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Green County until 8:45pm

BREAKING: A Tornado Warning has been issued for Green County 8:30pm.  The warned storm is now located near South Wayne and is currently moving northeast around 35 mph.  Take shelter now.

A Tornado Warning has been issued for Lafayette County until 8pm, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Rock and Walworth counties until 8:15pm.  We'll be watching very closely the storm west of Green County.

7:30pm Update: Heavy rainfall is still falling near Belvidere and Poplar Grove in Boone County, but additional thunderstorms continue to develop near Dubuque, IA, moving northeast.  There is some concern that these storms may back-build and move over the same area producing very heavy rain.  An additional couple inches of rainfall is possible through Midnight, or slightly after.

7:05pm Update: All active warnings have been cancelled, but heavy rain continues to fall from Boone, southward to DeKalb counties.  Additional thunderstorms are now beginning to develop in Iowa and are expected to move through before midnight.

5:30pm Update: Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Ogle and Winnebago counties until 6:15pm.  There is also a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Stephenson County until 5:30pm, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is extended until later.  This storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter sized hail.  Remember to remain indoors and away from windows until this storm passes.  As of right now, Rockford Metro is not in the warning.

Enough sunshine early in the day Thursday allowed instability to quickly grow by lunchtime.  Thunderstorms that were out west in Iowa were able to feed off of some of that instability and grow in size as they moved into northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

Currently, a line of thunderstorms stretching from Janesville, south to Rockford and Rochelle will produce frequent lightning, heavy rain and wind gusts to 40 mph.  Additional thunderstorms are likely into the evening and overnight ahead of the main cold front.

Also, a wake low has developed behind this line in southern Wisconsin.  Southerly wind gusts to 50 mph within the area of showers from Monroe on east are possible.
