Small chance for rain returns Tuesday

For the second day in a row, the high temperature reached 80 (or above), with Rockford's high reaching 82. Area wide, temperatures warmed into the low 80s. We've also had a little more cloud cover grace our skies this afternoon from an area of low pressure currently over the central Plains. Isolated severe thunderstorms have developed near the Nebraska/Kansas border, with rain showers and isolated storms forming ahead of the low.

Through the night cloud cover will increase locally as temperatures remain in the low 50s. Southwest winds will increase Tuesday as cloud cover thickens through the morning. Gusts will reach 25mph during the afternoon.

The morning hours should remain dry with a few scattered rain showers moving in late morning and early afternoon. The incoming moisture will be battling quite a bit of dry air, so initially it may be hard to get those rain showers to actually reach the surface. As for rainfall totals, it won't be much (if at all). Any rain that does move through will be out by the afternoon with some clearing taking place through the evening.

A second cold front will move in Wednesday morning with cloud cover increasing ahead of the front. Winds will turn to the northwest behind the front Wednesday, gusting to 30mph during the first half of the day. Temperatures on Tuesday will warm into the low 70s, with highs in the low 60s for Wednesday.

The next chance for rain will return late Thursday with another low-pressure system. This one will have a little more moisture and energy and could give us an isolated rumble of thunder (especially Thursday night).
