High Fire Danger in the Plains

Temperatures across the Plains the next couple of days are expected to rise into the middle/upper 80s and possibly low 90s.  Low humidity and gusty southerly winds will help create the ideal situation for fires later today and Wednesday.  As you can see from the current drought monitor abnormally dry conditions persist through parts of Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas, and Minnesota.  Of course the drought is extreme into parts of Oklahoma.  You may want to watch out if you live in southern Wisconsin as well.  While we had a pretty healthy dose of rain across northern Illinois last week, residents to the north are still dealing with those dry conditions.

Red Flag Warnings have been issued for the Plains for today and tomorrow.  Another concern out west will be the potential for cropland fires.  Fall harvesting is now underway and with the farm equipment moving across the cropland in the dry and breezy conditions the risk of the farm equipment igniting crop stubble will be high.  Unfortunately this threat will last through the week.  This may also become more of a concern for us later in the week.
